How These Celebrities Were Measured

A square face is about as wide as it is long, with a strong, angular jaw close in width to the forehead and cheekbones. Ollie ran the face scan from Ollie Stylist on one to three straight-on, freely licensed photos of 4,032 celebrities; those listed here are people it was at least 50% sure were square. The percentage after each name is that certainty.

Square was 11.9% of all faces, but it was the most lopsided shape between the sexes: 16.7% of men and only 3.1% of women.

Female Celebrities With Square Faces

Ella Langley (84%), Jhené Aiko (61%), Teyana Taylor (55%), Tori Kelly (54%), Adele (52%), Billie Piper (51%), Shania Twain (50%) and Kristin Chenoweth (50%).

Because square faces are rare among women, many lists of 'square-faced actresses' include faces that are really oblong-square or triangle. The scan only counts faces where the jaw is close in width to both the forehead and cheekbones.

Why Square Faces Are Mostly Male

The jaw is one of the most different facial features between the sexes. On average, men's jaws are larger and more angular, which brings the jaw width close to the cheekbones and gives the square outline. Women's jaws are on average narrower and their chins smaller, which pushes faces toward heart, diamond and oval. The full numbers are in what 4,000 celebrity faces reveal.

What Square-Faced Celebrities Do With Their Hair

Many of the men keep their hair very short or shaved, as 50 Cent and Mahershala Ali often have, which puts the strong jaw front and centre. Adele's signature voluminous blowouts and long, soft layers do the opposite, softening the angles with movement. Both approaches work; it depends whether you want to show off the jaw or soften it.
