Why Hair Colour Doesn't Affect Your Embedding
The face recognition pipeline crops to the face region, cheeks, forehead, chin, largely excluding the hair. The facial embedding encodes the geometry of this cropped region: feature positions and their spatial relationships. Hair colour is not a geometric property of the face; it is a surface colour property of the region the crop deliberately excludes.
This means changing your hair colour has essentially no effect on your celebrity match results. The same is true for hair highlights, dye treatments, and other colour changes. Even very striking colour changes (going from black to blonde) will not meaningfully shift your facial embedding.
When Hair Can Affect Results
Hair does affect results in two specific cases: when it falls across the face (obscuring the crop region), and when a hairstyle creates strong visual asymmetry that affects the alignment pipeline. Long bangs covering the forehead, hair swept dramatically to one side, or very voluminous styles that push the face off-centre in the frame can all affect the face detection and alignment pipeline, potentially degrading embedding quality.
The solution is to pull hair back for a matching photo, or ensure that the face crop region is fully visible and approximately centred in the frame. The hair itself can be any colour or style, what matters is that it does not encroach on the face region.
