Receding or Just Mature?
Most men's hairlines move back a little between the late teens and late twenties, from a straight juvenile hairline to a 'mature' hairline that sits slightly higher, often with gently rounded temples. That's normal and doesn't mean balding. A receding hairline keeps moving back, deepening at the temples into an M shape, often along with thinning at the crown.
Comparing photos a year or two apart is the simplest test. Doctors grade male-pattern hair loss on the Norwood scale. If you're worried, a doctor can talk through treatments, which work best when started early.
1. Textured Crop
Short sides and a choppy top pushed forward. The texture hides the temple recession without looking like it's covering anything.
2. French Crop
A short top with a straight, short fringe. It sits right over the hairline and is one of the most effective cuts for early recession.
3. Caesar Cut
Short all over with a short fringe combed forward, named after the Roman style. Neat and low maintenance.

4. Crew Cut
Short sides with a little length on top. Short hair reduces the contrast between full and receding areas.
5. Buzz Cut
Even length all over makes the hairline matter much less. A great choice once recession is advanced. See buzz cuts by face shape.
6. Short Quiff
A low, short quiff with faded sides. Keep it short; a tall quiff exposes the temples.
7. Slick Back With Short Sides
If recession is mild and even, hair swept back can actually suit it, and owns the hairline rather than hiding it.

8. Side Part With a Taper
Works for a mature or slightly receded hairline. Keep the top short enough that the part doesn't reveal a deep temple.
9. Messy Fringe
A slightly longer, piecey fringe falling forward. Best for early recession with good density on top.
10. High and Tight
Very short sides and a short top, a military classic. The tight sides make the top look fuller.
11. Skin Fade With a Short Top
A fade to skin with a short textured top balances the face and makes thinning on top less obvious by contrast.
12. Shaved Head
Once most of the hair on top is gone, shaving is often the sharpest option. Pair it with a beard for structure.
What to Avoid
Long hair combed forward over the temples, comb-overs and very long hair on top with short sides all draw attention to the recession. Heavy, shiny gel separates hair and shows the scalp.
