Why Copying a Celebrity Haircut Often Fails
Bringing a celebrity photo to the salon is the most common way to ask for a cut, and the most common way to be disappointed. The cut looked good on them partly because it suited their face shape. If yours is different, the same cut can land differently. The fix is to copy celebrities whose faces are shaped like yours.
The face shapes below come from Ollie's measurement of 4,032 celebrities with the scan in Ollie Stylist. The haircuts are looks these people are well known for, not necessarily what they wear today.
Oval: Anne Hathaway, Timothée Chalamet, Bradley Cooper
Anne Hathaway's short pixie, cut for Les Misérables, works because an oval face has nothing to hide. Timothée Chalamet's tousled, medium-length hair and Bradley Cooper's longer, swept-back hair show the range at the other end. If you're oval, you can copy almost any of them.

Round: Virat Kohli, Ed Sheeran
Virat Kohli's short-sided cut with volume on top and a full, shaped beard is the textbook way to lengthen a round face. Ed Sheeran's short, messy crop keeps texture on top rather than the sides. Copy the short sides first; they do most of the work.
Heart: Carey Mulligan, Beyoncé, Ariana Grande
Carey Mulligan, among the most heart shaped faces in the index, is known for a short pixie. Beyoncé's long, voluminous waves add fullness below the cheekbones. Ariana Grande's high ponytail shows a heart face can wear height when the ponytail's length balances it. A chin-length bob is the safest copy for most heart faces.

Square: Adele, Mahershala Ali, 50 Cent
Adele's voluminous blowouts and soft layers soften a strong jaw. Mahershala Ali and 50 Cent, both measured as square, often wear their hair very short or shaved, which shows the jaw off instead. Decide which effect you want.

Oblong: Sarah Jessica Parker, Cindy Crawford, Catherine, Princess of Wales
All three are known for hair with width at the sides: Sarah Jessica Parker's big curls, Cindy Crawford's voluminous layered blowout, and the Princess of Wales's bouncy, layered waves. Width and waves are exactly what a long face needs.
Diamond: Jennifer Lawrence
Jennifer Lawrence, measured as diamond, cut her hair into a pixie in 2013. Short cuts with some fullness at the forehead suit diamond faces, which are widest at the cheekbones. A fringe is the other easy copy.
Triangle: Keanu Reeves, Gwyneth Paltrow
Keanu Reeves' longer hair, falling past the jaw, balances a face that's widest at the jaw. Gwyneth Paltrow is known for long, straight hair, which adds length and keeps fullness away from the jawline.
